Dubai is a forward-thinking city. There are the most modern buildings, the most luxurious hotels, and the most beautiful restaurants, but there are no casinos today. The question is whether or not this will change in the future. If gambling is legalized in Dubai, the city will almost certainly develop into a true casino city. Many people, however, are skeptical that this is happening. Issam Kazim, the director of the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, in the same boat.
Although Dubai, according to Kazim, is a progressive city, he does not believe gambling is legal. The Islamic culture predominates in the city, and gambling, like drinking, is considered ‘haram’ by this culture. There are Islamic countries where casinos are built, primarily for tourists, but Kazim believes that casinos will not be built in Dubai. He contends that Islamic culture is more important than the progressiveness of the city.
Several casino operators, including MGM Resorts International, are interested in establishing a presence in Dubai. However, it is currently not possible to build casinos in this city. Gambling is still prohibited. As a result, casino operators seeking to establish themselves in Dubai can only construct resorts in the city-state.
If gambling is ever legalized again, there is a good chance that the international casino operators’ hotels will be expanded with a nice casino right away. However, we are not quite there yet. And, if Kazim is to be believed, this will never happen.
According to Issam Kazim, Dubai is working hard to attract more tourists. By 2020, the city hopes to have attracted at least 20 million tourists from all over the world. According to the head of Dubai’s Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, no casinos are required for this. Various projects are being developed to attract more tourists to the city, but casinos are not likely to open in the near future. It remains to be seen whether this will happen in the long run.
